5 questions to discover your purpose

What is My Purpose

When I was 27, Bo Sanchez gave me a book called The Path.  I brought a journal and filled it up during the 3 weeks I was in Italy with my mom. I was astounded as to how long it took to discover what one is meant to do.  At the end of all the exercises in the book, I was still unsure but I followed it anyway.  It said, “I am an ambassador of Jesus bringing people closer to Him”.  I was working as a missionary then and I was on fire.

Life-long Learning

I will never stop learning. I bring waterproof speakers to the shower. Something I learned from another EO (Entrepreneur’s Organization) member.  I heard a man say, “You can discover your purpose in 5 minutes”. Wow! That’s fast.  I don’t need to go on a 3-week retreat.  He got the audience participating with 5 questions.

  1. Who are you?

  2. What do you do?

  3. Who do you do it for?

  4. What do they need?

  5. What has changed because they met you?

So I played along. “I’m Eileen. I’m a Work-Life Designer. I guide entrepreneurs to rediscover their passion and purpose. They want clarity, self-discovery, fulfillment and joy. They have transformed their lives into a life they want to live in. They are energized, purposeful and lit”.

Did you do it?

Hey, it worked.  I really felt inspired as I read it back to myself.  Now, your turn.

  1. Who are you?

  2. What do you do?

  3. Who do you do it for?

  4. What do they need?

  5. What has changed because they met you?

The Missing Question

If you are having difficulty crafting your purpose statement despite all the books you read on purpose – Amazon has over 60k books on the topic, start a daily journal measuring what made you feel successful. It became practice in our company to ask employees “What made you feel successful personally and professionally in the last month. Who were you with. What were you doing. How did you feel. What did you do? Be specific about details”. This allowed us to see what special gifts, talents, strengths they had that they enjoyed doing. When you are aware of your strengths, you end up doing work that you love and you add value to the world. It also made everyone happier.
